How to convert PDF to Word

  1. Select the PDF you want to edit.
  2. Click Convert to Word.
  3. Download the .docx file and open it in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages.
  4. Check the layout and fix anything that needs it, such as tables or columns.

What you get

The converter reads the text layer of each page and rebuilds it as a real Word document (.docx):

  • lines are joined back into paragraphs, and words split by end-of-line hyphens are mended;
  • larger text becomes Heading 1 or Heading 2, so Word’s navigation pane works;
  • each PDF page starts on a new page in Word;
  • you also get a plain .txt copy, handy for pasting into other apps or an AI chatbot.

What it does not do

To be clear about the limits: images, tables, multi-column layouts, colours and exact fonts are not recreated. For those, the most faithful free option is often Microsoft Word itself (File → Open a PDF in Word 2013 or later) or Google Docs (Open with → Google Docs in Google Drive), although both upload or convert the file in their own software.

Scanned PDFs are pictures of pages, not text. The tool detects this and tells you, instead of producing an empty document.

Best results

  • Works best on text-heavy documents: contracts, letters, reports, essays and articles.
  • Check numbered lists and any tables after converting; they come out as plain paragraphs.
  • If you only need to quote a few lines, copying from a PDF reader can be quicker.

Private conversion

Many “free” PDF-to-Word sites need an email address or upload your document to process it. Here the PDF is read by your browser using Mozilla’s open-source PDF.js, and the Word file is assembled on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Will the Word file look exactly like the PDF?

No, and it is better to know that up front. This tool rebuilds the text, paragraphs and headings so you can edit them. Images, tables, multi-column layouts and exact fonts are not copied. For a pixel-perfect copy you need desktop software such as Microsoft Word, which can open PDFs directly.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Not on its own. A scan is a picture of text, so there is no text to extract. The tool detects this and tells you. Scans need OCR (text recognition) software.

Is it free to convert PDF to Word here?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no email and no limit on the number of conversions.

Is my document private?

Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the PDF and the Word file never leave your device.
