How to convert MP4 to MP3

  1. Select a video file from your device (MP4, MOV, M4V or WebM).
  2. Choose the MP3 quality. 192 kbps suits music; 128 kbps is plenty for speech.
  3. Click Extract audio.
  4. Preview the result and click Download.

Good uses

  • Listen to a recorded lecture, webinar or meeting on the go, without the video.
  • Turn a phone video of a concert, a speech or a family moment into an audio file.
  • Prepare audio for transcription: an MP3 is much smaller than the video. You can feed either into our Audio to Text tool.
  • Pull out the voice-over or music from your own video project.

Supported files

MP4, MOV (iPhone videos), M4V and WebM work in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and in Safari for most files. Some MKV and AVI files can’t be read by browsers; the tool tells you if a file isn’t supported.

Bitrate guide

Bitrate Size per minute (approx.) Use for
128 kbps 1 MB Speech, lectures, podcasts
192 kbps 1.4 MB Music (recommended)
320 kbps 2.4 MB Best MP3 quality
WAV 10 MB Editing in audio software

Converting can’t add quality that isn’t in the original video: if the video’s sound was low quality, choosing 320 kbps won’t improve it.

Your files only

This tool converts videos stored on your own device. It doesn’t download from YouTube or other streaming sites, which generally forbid that in their terms. Respect copyright when you use audio from other people’s videos.

The video is processed in your browser and never uploaded. To shorten the result, open it in the MP3 Cutter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert YouTube videos?

This tool converts video files stored on your device. It does not download videos from YouTube or other sites; doing that usually breaks their terms of service and may infringe copyright.

How long can the video be?

Videos up to about 30 minutes work well on most computers. The browser has to hold the whole decoded soundtrack in memory, so longer videos, or phones with little memory, may fail. Split long videos first if that happens.

Which bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps is a good default for music. 128 kbps keeps files small and is plenty for talks and voice recordings. 320 kbps is the maximum MP3 quality.

Is the video uploaded?

No. The audio is extracted and encoded in your browser.
